Journey to the East: How Akram Abdulfattah is Fusing Indian and Arabic Music in His Latest Album
Akram Abdulfattah is bringing his revolutionary sound to international audiences around the world. A Violin virtuoso, composer and producer hailing from Palestine, Akram is pushing the envelope of traditional music by blending the sounds of his homeland with an array of contemporary influences to create something unique and powerful.
Heavily inspired by the Carnatic violinist L. Shankar, Akram continues to explore East Asian music, whilst infusing it with elements of pop, jazz and classic Arabic music. Since coming onto the music scene in 2006, Akram has achieved much success, winning the prestigious first prize in the Marcel Khalifa Competition (2008 and 2009), thePalestinian “On Stage” Competition for Ensembles (2012), and the National Music Competition for Ensembles (2012).
After a stint as violin teacher at the Beit Al-Musica Conservatory, Akram shook things up by touring with Mohammed Assaf and composing and recording Awan’s debut album (2013-2015). Now, after forming the world’s youngest Palestinian musical quartet, composed of the Monologue Music Ensemble, Joy Sarkar, HK Vankatram, Omar Faruk Tekbile and Brian Kean, Akram is ready to bring his medley of revolutionary sounds to audiences around the world.
Akram’s mission is to use instrumental music as a means of introducing to the world the Palestinian culture, legacy and folklore, and to further break down barriers of alienation and bring people of diverse backgrounds together.
Kicking off his global tour on May 15th in London, Akram’s album Jawa: a fusion of pop, jazz and modern and classic Arabic music, promises to be an enchanting experience not to be missed.
